How to Become a Maker
The process to becoming a Maker at 1400 Food Lab is pretty straight forward. Starting your own food business requires a lot of planning, so we've worked to make the process of utilizing our kitchens as streamlined as possible.
1. It All Starts With A Tour
Every Thursday at 3:30, our staff lead tours of the 1400 Food Lab facility -- no appointment necessary. They'll show you all the features and equipment available, answer any questions you may have, and outline next steps in the process.
We encourage ANYONE who is interested to visit! The earlier you start planning, the more successful your food business will be and helping food businesses succeed is what we're ALL ABOUT!
Step 2: Licensing and Certification
Because we are a shared commercial kitchen space, all of our makers rely on each other to keep the highest standards of cleanliness and safety. Below is a checklist of items you'll need to present before we execute a client contract with you.
- Registration as a business with Ohio Secretary of State
- Establish a Federal Employer Identification Number
- ServSafe Manager-Level Certification for business owner and primary kitchen user (if other than owner). Level 1 Certification is required for all other kitchen or facility users
Business Liability Insurance
We recommend a minimum of $1 million annual coverage. Ask your agent or carrier to prepare Certificates of Insurance for 1400 Food Lab and Connect Realty (owner of the building) showing them as additional insured on your policy. Most insurance companies do not charge extra for this service (although some do). FLIprogram.com is a great resource for start-up food businesses.
Licenses & Permits
Every product and business is different. Many will be able to operate entirely under the 1400 Food Lab licensing and registration. Others may require a specific permit or license. We will work with you and the appropriate regulatory authorities to get your business up and running as quickly as possible.
3. Finalizing the Contract
Once you have completed the above steps, send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org to set up an appointment to finish the contracting process. Plan to spend about 30 minutes with us including a brief kitchen and facility orientation. (Depending on your level of experience and knowledge of commercial kitchen operations, additional training may be required before your first production session).
You will be given a key fob allowing 24/7 access to the building and invited to join our online scheduling system and client message board. All kitchen time is booked by the client through the scheduling portal and is paid by credit card at the time of booking. If you opt for cold and/or dry storage, those services are billed monthly.
If you have any questions, please fill out our contact form and we'll get back to you shortly.
